INDIAN ARMY INFROMATIONS:



Indian Army is regarded as one of the strongest armies in the world. The objective of Indian Army is to safeguard the nation from external or internal threats. It is the 3rd largest army in the world with more than 12 lakh active personnel. To effectively manage such a large force, army has its own structure and formations

Overall command of Indian Army is in hands of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Bikram Singh. The structure and formation of the Indian Army is given below:
Commands
Indian Army has 7 operational commands, each headed by a General Officer Commanding-in-Chief with the rank of Lieutenant General. Headquarters of Indian Army is at New Delhi and each command is directly attached to this Army Headquarter. The commands of Indian Army are:
  • Northern Command: Headquartered at Udhampur, Jammu and Kashmir
  • Eastern Command: Headquartered at Kolkata, West Bengal
  • Central Command: Headquartered at Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh
  • Western Command: Headquartered at Chandimandir, Haryana
  • Southern Command: Headquartered at Pune, Maharashtra
  • South-Western Command: Headquartered at Jaipur, Rajastham
  • Training Command: Headquartered at Shimla, Himachal Pradesh
Note: In some competitive books, the training command of Indian Army is given as Mhow, Madhya Pradesh which is wrong. The training command is at Shimla, Himachal Pradesh.

Corps

A command generally consists of 2 or more corps with a common function representing an arm of service. A corps is an army field formation responsible for a particular area under a command.

Division

A division comes under a corps. It usually consists of 12,000-15,000 combat troops and 7500 support elements. It is head by the General Officer Commanding in the rank of Major General. Divisions can be infantry divisions, armoured divisions, artillery divisons, etc.

Brigade

Each division is made up of several Brigades. A brigade generally consists of around 3,000 -5,000 combat troops with the supporting elements. It is headed by a Brigadier. Other than brigades in army divisions, the Indian Army also has several independent brigades which directly operate under the corps commander.

Battalion

A battalion consists of more than 900 combat soldiers. It is the Infantry’s main fighting unit. Each battalion is commanded by an officer with the rank of Colonel

Company

A company is an intermediate between a Battalion and a Platoon. It consists of 120 soldiers which are headed by the officer with the rank of Major.

Platoon

A Platoon consists of 32 soldiers. A platoon is headed by the officer with the rank of Lieutenant or a Junior Commissioned Office with the rank of Subedar or Naib- Subedar.

Section

A section is the smallest military formation of Indian Army. The strength of a section is 10 soldiers. It is commanded by a Non-Commissioned Officer of the rank of Havildar Major.
